Paths is a series of 3 miniature book necklaces :
Journey, Memories, Continuity
From time to time my work gravitates back to a certain few symbols. Whenever I need to regroup, having had too much distractions to a point where I feel that my creative process doesn't make sense anymore, I would slowly pull myself back to base, and search within again, instead of with-out. And I always go back to books. They are my most basic canvas, and my most dear. I also find that I would gravitate towards the clock face and the compass. They intrigue me. I ask myself why. With the compass, perhaps I yearn for a sense of direction, or an exploration, to be free. With the clock face … a sense of regret? Of time wasted? Of non achievement? Of running out of time?
In this series, I wanted to explore deeper … but I also wanted to look at the positive side of these symbols. After a long thought, I finally had an epiphany. I started to work on my compass piece. This time I saw it as life's 'Journey'. Everyday we are on a Journey, and we discern and learn things on our way. We become better, hopefully. And with that we create 'Memories'. That's how my second piece came about. Making Memories with love ones, making memories with our surroundings, our work ... our Self. Suddenly, I realized that the clock face or timepiece fitted in perfectly. No longer is it about running out of time … it is now about 'Continuity'. The Continuity of this Journey in the first place, the Continuity of these Memories … The Continuity of Life, as a cycle.
So now I see my symbols in a different light, a different Path. Maybe in all this time they have been as such … Perhaps it is I who chose not to see them this way.

These mixed media book necklaces are an assemblage of resined paper, antique clock and watch gears, ornate filigrees, recycle brass sheets and brass wires, patina, brass tone findings, glass beads and various Jasper beads. Journey has a compass needle made from brass wire and clay, Memories has an old clock face and a pennib and Continuity has an old flat key.
* the necklace is 28 inches in circumference, plus 6 inches from bail to end of book
* the book measures approx. 1.75 (W) x 2.25 (H) x 0.75 (T) inches and has 152 writable pages. Pages are coffee stained. I have my name signed randomly on one of the pages.
