the Coming of Autumn
As if stunned by lightning, Raven's sword stopped only inches away from smashing into the girl's face. Her attention shifted from the fight to the curious-looking amulet on the ground. With one swift stroke, the girl disarmed the now occupied Raven with her spear. Both the girls then went straight for the amulet lying on the ground. Autumn reached it first.
“Give that to me!”, Raven said.
“Why should I, it belongs to me!”, Autumn retorted.
“Calm down girls!”, the Bowman came running in between the trees towards the two girls.
Seated at the opposite sides of the fire, the girls quietly examined each other whilst watching the Bowman cook dinner. Autumn has put her amulet back on. Raven gently touched hers, which was hidden under her tunic.
'This girl's amulet looks very similar to mine', Raven thought to herself. Frowning she tried to examine the little book and the encapsulated pen hanging off the amulet, from across the fire. Her own amulet had these too.
“You said your mother gave you that amulet? Where is she now?”, asked Raven.
“She's dead”, Autumn replied shortly, staring into the fire.
“I'm sorry”, said Raven quietly. After a seconds pause, Raven asked again, “Who do you live with then?”
The doe-eyed girl looked up, slightly astonished. She's never had anyone have so much interest in her, except for her gramps of course.
“I lived with my Gramps in the woods, only he's not my 'real' gramps … anyway, Gramps gave this necklace to me, if you're wondering. When I turned 12. Said it belonged to me. Now he's dead too. And I'm supposed to go find some blind woman on my own … like I know where to find her! Ahhh!!!”, Autumn threw her hands up in exasperation.
The Bowman froze for a tiny second as Raven threw a quick glance at him. Not looking up, the Bowman continued roasting the lizard.
